AN APPLICATION FOR FUNDS

The Hamelin Rat Catching Association

29 Hatto Gardens

Lower Saxony

Tel:   020 7123 4567

Mr A Cannybody

The Secretary

Money Bags Trust

Lower Saxony

1 October 2002

Dear Mr Cannybody

REDUCTION OF BUBONIC PLAGUE – RECRUITMENT OF ADDITIONAL RAT CATCHER

APPLICATION FOR FUNDS

EDUCTION OF

1. We are raising money to employ an additional rat catcher.

2. Rats are increasingly invading the Whitehall area of the town. There is no statutory rodent control organisation and no chance of statutory funding. Rat carried diseases are spreading, with an overall 10% increase in local hospital cases, in the last year 3 children are known to have died of such diseases. (Blunkett Report, May 2001).

3. Our Association is normally supported by our own fundraising events (we raised over £4,000 last year) plus appeals to local and national charities. We currently have an annual budget of only £25,000, half of which is covered by income from an invested legacy. The Lord Mayor is Chairman of our Management Committee We employ one full time rat catcher (all other workers are volunteers).

4. In order to significantly reduce the rat population, thereby reducing diseases and unnecessary child deaths, we need to recruit, train and employ a second rat catcher. The Local Health Authority have calculated that doubling the rat catching will more than halve the related diseases in the second year of operation, with further improvements in subsequent years and related benefits to the local community of a reduction in child deaths and the release of hospital beds.

5  Additional costs:        Recruiting and training                                            £ 3,200
                                    Equipment (van, pipes and telephone)
       £15,000
Annual Running costs (salary, NI, overheads)            £22 500
                                    First year total
 £40,700
Subsequent years                                                 £22,500 p.a. plus inflation

6 Our March 2002 application to the Community Fund was rejected. We intend to reapply at the earliest opportunity, but this is unlikely to be until 2003. We have already raised £2,800 locally and the Robert Browning Trust have awarded us £5,000 plus £3,000 p.a. for the next 4 years. We are asking all local trusts for help in raising the balance (preferably to cover the next 4 years) and hope to recruit in November this year. The Hatto Trust has refused, but the Hamelin Foundation are considering a grant of £1,000 p.a. for 4 years

7. I enclose last year’s accounts and would be pleased to give you any more information you need. Our telephone is only manned between 3 and 5pm each weekday. Although we are not a registered charity, the

Pied Charity (No. 123456) is willing to administer funds on our behalf.

8 We are particularly hopeful that you can support this appeal, as your generous donation to us in 2000 and practical support for the children’s marathon put our operation on a sound footing then and the benefits

this new initiative will bring to the local community relate closely to the aims of the Money Bags Trust.

                        P. Piper
