It also works to embed these things as integral parts of the business, and supervises roll out of activities.

The appointed provider should show innovation in delivery and development.

Church Urban Fund set to receive £5m Government funding

Source: Acevo / Telegraph / FINE

Church Urban Fund (Church of England’s poverty relief arm) is expected to be given £5m by the Government later this year. This is potentially controversial as the money is likely to be diverted from Preventing Violent Extremism, Labour’s programme aimed at stopping young Muslims turning to radical Islam. The Government didn’t confirm the grant but agreed it did want to use the experience and presence of church groups to help realise the idea of volunteers in the “Big Society” taking over some of the state’s functions. Community-Owned Pubs Support Programme cancelled

Source: Third Sector / FINE

Government announced this Programme in March, aiming to help 50 communities take their pubs into cooperative ownership. But new government has announced that the Programme will now be closed and replaced by guidance leaflets for communities facing pub closures.

The Programme’s administrator, Plunkett Foundation, is planning an emergency summit to explore other ways of assisting.

Government consultation on new Poverty Impact Fund

Source: Clinks / FINE

The Government aims to establish a new Poverty Impact Fund this year with the objective of supporting poverty-fighting groups, focusing on service delivery. The Fund is being designed with 2 initial funding windows, tailored to different types and sizes of organisations:

  • Innovation Grants: for small UK-based VCS organisations (annual average turnover of £500,000), encouraging innovative approaches to poverty reduction

  • Impact Grants: for UK-based VCS organisations working on poverty reduction programmes at larger scale in one or more poor countries. This will also be available to locally registered VCS organisations in countries where DFID has a country office

DFID may also consider developing a further Investment Window, for large UK and globally recognised organisations with strong strategic and policy relevance.

They are seeking views with regard to the overall design and scope of the Fund, including size of grants under each window, number of grants available to each organisation and matched funding levels.

Views and comments should be sent to: pifconsultation@dfid.gov.uk no later than 22nd September 2010.

Northern Rock Foundation funding concerns

Source: Journal

The Foundation’s main source of funding is set to run out at the end of the year. In 2008, then Chancellor Alistair Darling agreed the foundation would receive £15m a year up until 2010 as part of the nationalisation of Northern Rock. Talks between Northern Rock and the Foundation about its long-term future have begun. The Chairman of the Foundation’s trustees said there is enough money to continue work for at least four more years with £37m held in reserves as of end of 2009.
